Reboat!
I’m quite sure that plenty of people were deeply saddened when they opened Thomas Madsen Mygdal’s email tonight. Thomas organises a yearly event called Reboot that unites some of the very best free thinking, doing and discussing to be had on this planet. Not this year, though: Reboot is taking a year off. Says Thomas: “for me a year without the pressure of doing reboot along a couple of dayjobs (perhaps stopping those grey hairs from appearing as rapidly?), lot’s of time to explore what should be next for reboot (to reboot reboot as some have said, would love your input) - and most importantly for all of us, lot’s of time to reboot the world!”
Now, that last bit is typical of Thomas: I’m not doing the event this year, but that doesn’t mean that you should wait around for me to do something else. All I personally know is that there is plenty of wonderful, interested and interesting people around who had some time set aside for late June. A half hour ago I just passed through Hamburg harbour on my way home and came up with a suggestion to haphazardly fill the inevitable gap that Reboot left: Reboat!
Here’s my suggestion: Let’s take a trip across the Baltic Sea together and use the time aboard the ship to have a barcamp-style event that mirrors the diversity and intensity of sessions, talks and events normally reserved for Reboot. Water as the premium commodity of the 21st century could be a topical focus. Joining forces with people from across the Baltic sea in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Russia could be another one.
There are several ferry lines that would fit the bill: Kiel-Klaipeda is one, Travemünde - Ventspils another option. The tickets are quite cheap, as is renting a cabin. Both trips could be combined with an overnight stay at the port of call. That would turn Reboat into a three day event.
I am really just getting into the groove with this idea. There is loads of unanswered questions. And I need your help. Please send this to anyone you know who might be interested and please use the comments to tell me what you feel about doing Reboat, whether you would come and what you might want to contribute. And Thomas: If you read this please tell me if you don’t feel that it’s right to do an event like that. I’d obviously respect it. If we want to get this off the ground we need to get going soon. I’m game. Are you?
EDIT: So apparently loads of people think that it’s a good idea to have a Reboat. Very good! Check out the Reboat page on Ning and become part of the process.
